MY POSTS FROM THE HEART
Earlier this year I saw a call for volunteers to join the team for the Lincoln TEDx event. I’ve been a fan of TED for a long time and it’s great to support a local event such as this. Given my experience with TED and my photography it would be great to offer my help and take part. If you’re unaware of what TED is then here is what TED describes itself as:
TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.
TEDx events are a volunteer led event that bring TED conferences to a local audience and showcases thoughts and experiences of great minds who live in the local community. TEDx Brayford Pool is the Lincoln based event run 100% by volunteers and supported by local businesses to make it all happen.
Lincoln stands in a great place for an event such as this with the university offering a wide range of courses employing lots of people from all over the world who stand at the top of their field as well as having local people from various backgrounds and different life experiences. The event saw speakers discuss topics such as local litter picking, dealing with anorexia, the treatment of male nurses and a warning of the impending global food crisis because of phosphorous shortages.
The event was streamed live on Youtube and you can watch the talks yourself at the link below. My personal favourites were Zoe Burnett’s talk on embracing your set point and Sean Morton’s talk on challenging nursing stereotypes. Both were really thought provoking and like the theme of the whole day which was Rethink, gave you pause for thought and challenges you to rethink your perceptions. In this case it was about weight and males in the nursing industry.
There was something for everyone and a wealth of experiences and thought provoking topics to peak your curiosity. I was proud to do my bit in capturing the event and be part of TED for a day. Hopefully I can do it again at the next one. Fingers crossed! I’ve made a gallery of the images below. Do check out the talks themselves too!

Every year I get the opportunity to photograph the Lincoln Grand Prix. A cycle race that’s part of the HSBC British Cycling National Road Series, which is a series of races that tours the country with each race giving points that go towards an overall title at the end. Read my blog and see the photographs from the event….
